Waterproof Mortar, 20Kg Pail, for shaping and waterproofing
Yes thats correct, a waterproof mortar!
Cement based products normal absorb water. This can be problematic with outdoor oven as any trapped water can lead to cracking or explosive spalling.
We therefore recommend using this waterproof mortar on the outside of your oven to help protect it from water ingress. Even though you may be painting your oven, we still recommend using this product in case the paint is ever compromised (think long term when you build a great oven!).
This NZ made material is so impressive that it is designed to release moisture but not soak it up. Effectively this makes it breathable. Perfect for pizza ovens!
This mortar will cure to a compression strength of 22mpa in 7 days and 27mpa in 28 days - so it goes hard! (A standard mortar used for residential brick laying is about 12.5mpa).
Simply add water to the correct ratio, mix and you are ready to go. (And yes the material becomes waterproof after it has cured so it is possible to mix water into it!)
This is not a high temperature mortar and should only be applied on the outside of the oven insulation. It will require mesh reinforcing to give it additional strength on an oven.
It is very possible to get a nice sanding finish (a rough surface finish) on the mortar by rubbing it down with a plastering sponge as it is curing. We recommend spreading the mortar with one of our plastic trowels and using the Curvinator 3000 (see tools section) to make sure you achieve a beautiful curved finish.
Whilst it might be temping to use this as the final coat, it can still develop hairline cracks so we still recommend painting the outside of the oven.
Additional coats of decorative finishing plasters can be added over the top of this material but it is important this coat has grooves run in it to allow the next coats to adhere.
Freight: It comes in a handy 20kg pail, so it can be sent via standard courier. For larger amounts the 30kg bags are also available in the shop. The price is the same because of the plastic pail price but the freight for the 20kg pail will be cheaper than for the 30kg bags.
